A coal mining company that dug bituminous, steam, and metallurgical coal from the Central Appalachia and Illinois Basin regions, selling it to electric utilities and steelmakers. It was formed in 1988 when it bought McCoy Elkhorn Coal and Bell County Coal from Transco Coal Company. Headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, it took its name from the James River that flows through the city.
