A maker of prescription medicines for people with chronic kidney disease, Keryx Biopharmaceuticals sold Auryxia (ferric citrate), an oral drug that lowers excess phosphorus in patients on dialysis and treats iron-deficiency anemia in kidney patients not yet on dialysis. Founded in 1998, the company took its name from the Greek word "keryx," meaning herald or messenger. In 2018, Keryx was acquired by Akebia Therapeutics.
