American Farmland Company

A farmland real estate investment trust (REIT) that owned and leased U.S. farmland — orchards, vegetable row crops, and commodity row crops — to the farmers who worked it. Its plain, descriptive name said exactly what it did. In 2016 it agreed to be acquired by Farmland Partners Inc., and when the stock-for-stock merger closed in 2017 the combined firm became one of the country's largest public farmland REITs. Fun quirk: it's easily confused with American Farmland Trust, a nonprofit farmland conservation group.
