A real estate investment trust that owned single-tenant commercial properties—freestanding retail, restaurant, office, and industrial buildings—across the US and Canada, leasing them back to the businesses that occupied them under long-term net leases. It began in 2010 as American Realty Capital Properties and was renamed VEREIT in 2015, a mashup of the Latin "veritas" (truth) and REIT, chosen after an accounting scandal to signal a fresh start. In 2021 it was absorbed into Realty Income, with its office buildings spun off into a separate company.
