Liberty Media Corporation

A holding company that owns big names in media and sports, Liberty Media controls the Formula One racing series, the Atlanta Braves baseball team, and a large stake in SiriusXM satellite radio. It was spun off in 1991 from the cable giant Tele-Communications Inc., the empire built by the dealmaker John Malone, and takes its name from Liberty Cable, one of Malone's early acquisitions. The company is known for its tangled structure of tracking stocks, each tied to a different asset, which has become a running joke among investors who need a map to follow it.
