People use it to recruit, network, and follow companies; Microsoft bought it to power its workplace tools. It began in 2002 when cofounder Reid Hoffman and colleagues launched it from his living room, going live to the public in 2003. The name plays on the idea of being "linked" to one's professional network, and the platform is often credited with popularizing the online résumé.
