A registered investment company that serves as the legal umbrella for a family of exchange-traded funds managed by SS&C ALPS Advisors, a Denver-based firm with roots dating to 1985. Its best-known fund, the Alerian MLP ETF (AMLP), launched in 2010 as the first ETF devoted to master limited partnerships — the pipeline and energy-infrastructure businesses that pass income to shareholders. The name ALPS isn't an acronym; it's simply the firm's brand.
