A maker of cloud services that keeps websites fast and secure, Akamai runs one of the world's largest content-delivery networks—a web of servers that stores copies of pages, videos, and apps close to users so they load quickly—and shields businesses from cyberattacks. It was founded in 1998 by MIT researchers, including mathematician Tom Leighton, to cure the slow-loading "World Wide Wait" of the early internet. The name is a Hawaiian word meaning "clever," chosen by co-founder Daniel Lewin after finding it in a dictionary.
