A coal producer whose roots trace to a coal brokerage started in 1920 by A.T. Massey in Richmond, Virginia, this company digs and sells bituminous coal — metallurgical grades for making steel and thermal grades that fire power plants. It took shape when Alpha Natural Resources bought Massey Energy in 2011 and renamed those operations after itself. Fun fact: the name honors Massey, whose family firm later passed through engineering giant Fluor before being spun off in 2000.
