Micros Systems, Inc.
A maker of point-of-sale systems that run the cash registers and kitchen screens of restaurants, hotels, casinos, and cruise ships around the world. It began in 1977 when engineer Louis Brown Jr. founded PICOS Manufacturing to build "smart" cash registers for restaurants, renaming it MICROS Systems a year later — an acronym for Modular Integrated Cash Register Operating Systems. Oracle bought the company in 2014, and its products still live on under Oracle's hospitality and retail divisions.
