Microislet, Inc.

A San Diego biotechnology company that developed a treatment for Type 1 diabetes using insulin-producing cells harvested from pigs, wrapped in tiny protective capsules designed to shield them from the body's immune system. Founded in 1998, its name blends "micro" for its microencapsulation technology and "islet" for the Islets of Langerhans, the pancreatic cell clusters that make insulin. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2008 and its assets were liquidated.
