Monsanto Company
An American agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology company, Monsanto was best known for the Roundup herbicide and for engineering genetically modified "Roundup Ready" crops such as corn, soybeans, and cotton used by farmers around the world. It was founded in St. Louis in 1901 by John Francis Queeny, who named it after his wife's maiden name, Olga Monsanto, and started out making the artificial sweetener saccharin. In 2018 the company was bought by Bayer, which folded it into its crop science division and retired the Monsanto name.
