Montauk Renewables, Inc.
A Pittsburgh-based renewable energy company that captures methane rising from landfills, dairy farms, and other organic waste and turns it into renewable natural gas and electricity. Its roots reach back to Getty Synthetic Fuels, a pioneer that built one of the first landfill-gas-to-energy plants in Chicago in 1980, which Montauk later folded in. Fun fact: the name "Montauk" echoes the village at the eastern tip of Long Island, though the company has never explained the connection.
