A maker of commercial trucks, school and commercial buses, and diesel engines, Navistar builds the International-brand trucks that carry freight across the country and powers fleets with its own engines and Fleetrite parts. The company began as the International Harvester Company, born in 1902 from a merger of Cyrus McCormick's harvester firm and the Deering Harvester Company. After selling its farm-machinery business in the 1980s, it took the new name "Navistar"—coined by a consulting firm—to shake off its agricultural past, even as it kept the International brand on its trucks.
