Its core platform, called PATrOL, uses synthetic peptide-nucleic acid molecules — chemical stand-ins for DNA — that quietly slip into cells and fix faulty genes without triggering an immune alarm, unlike CRISPR's bacterial tools. Founded in 2009 by geneticist Dietrich Stephan, the company went public in 2019 through a reverse merger with an older drug firm.
