Newfield Exploration Company
An independent energy company that explored for and produced crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids, working in the Gulf of Mexico and major U.S. onshore basins including the Anadarko, Arkoma, Uinta, and Eagle Ford Shale. It was founded in 1988 by Joe B. Foster, the former chairman of Tenneco Oil Company, who started it with 26 employees. The name "Newfield" reflects the company's mission of exploring "new fields" for oil and gas, and the firm was later acquired by Encana (now Ovintiv) in 2019.
