Newmarket Corporation
A Richmond, Virginia-based holding company that makes chemical additives for fuels and lubricants through its main subsidiary, Afton Chemical — products that help gasoline, diesel, and engine oils run cleaner, longer, and with lower emissions. It began life in 1887 as the Albemarle Paper Manufacturing Company, and in 1962 its leader bought the far larger Ethyl Corporation in a takeover that newspapers dubbed "Jonah Swallows the Whale." The company later took the Ethyl name, then renamed itself NewMarket in 2004 after a reorganization split its businesses apart.
