Nexen Inc
A Canadian oil and gas producer that dug for crude in the oil sands, the North Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and offshore Nigeria. Born in 1971 as Canadian Occidental Petroleum (CanOxy), it began as a branch of the Los Angeles firm Occidental until 2000, when it bought out its parent and, as a condition of the split, was forced to drop the Occidental name and rebrand as Nexen — a blend of "next" and "nexus." In 2013 the Chinese energy giant CNOOC bought the company outright.
