It was founded in 1992 by Essel Bailey Jr., who launched it almost like a modern SPAC—going public to raise the money to buy its first portfolio of 37 nursing homes. Headquartered in Hunt Valley, Maryland, its properties stretch across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
