Ormat Technologies, Inc.
A Nevada-based company that taps heat from deep underground to generate clean electricity, designing, building, owning and running geothermal power plants in dozens of countries. It grew out of a 1965 Israeli startup: founder Lucien Bronicki, an engineer, sold his apartment to fund the venture after his lab's solar-power project was cut, and the firm later moved its headquarters to the US. The name "Ormat" comes from the Organic Rankine Cycle turbine technology at the heart of its machines, and its first unit was a small solar-powered pump installed in Mali in 1966.
