Founded in 2006 in Santa Barbara, California by Klaus Schauser and Jon Walker, the company started as a general business-tools maker before pivoting to property management in 2008. Its name blends "app" (its software) with "folio" (a portfolio of properties), and its co-founder had previously built the company behind GoToMyPC and GoToMeeting.
