A Russian energy giant headquartered in Moscow, Lukoil is one of the world's largest producers of crude oil, running everything from drilling wells to refining and selling fuel at its own gas stations and convenience stores. It was founded in 1991 by merging three state-run oil enterprises from the Western Siberian towns of Langepas, Uray, and Kogalym — and its name is a mashup of those towns' initials plus the word "oil."
