A developer and operator of utility-scale wind, solar, and energy storage projects across North America and beyond, Pattern Energy also builds the long-distance transmission lines that carry that power to cities. It was born in 2009 when private-equity firm Riverstone Holdings bought the North American wind business of the collapsed investment house Babcock & Brown. The name "Pattern" came from the team's knack for finding patterns in weather and market data — and from the tidy rows of turbines they plant on the landscape.
