It began in 1877 as a small Milwaukee drugstore run by the Patterson brothers, who reportedly boosted early sales by offering customers free swigs from a keg of bourbon. The company focused on dental supplies for over a century before expanding into animal health, and renamed itself Patterson Companies in 2004.
