Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust
A real estate company that owns, develops, and manages shopping malls and mixed-use retail destinations across the Mid-Atlantic, including the Cherry Hill Mall in New Jersey and the Fashion District in Philadelphia. Known as PREIT, it was founded in 1960 by Philadelphia attorney Sylvan M. Cohen, right after the Real Estate Investment Trust Act made such public real-estate investment possible, making it one of the first publicly held REITs in America. Its name is simply an initialism of its full title—Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust—a mouthful so long that the company has leaned on its snappy four-letter nickname ever since.
