Arch Coal Inc
A major US coal producer, Arch Coal digs and sells two kinds of coal: metallurgical coal for making steel and thermal coal for generating electricity, serving customers in the US and abroad. It began in 1969 when Merl Kelce, who had earlier helped build Peabody Coal into an industry giant, partnered with Ashland Oil and the Hunt family to form Arch Mineral Corporation near St. Louis. In 1997 that company merged with Ashland Coal to become Arch Coal, and in 2025 it merged with CONSOL Energy to form Core Natural Resources.
