A maker of software that helps large companies build and run modern cloud-based applications, Pivotal sold the Cloud Foundry platform along with tools like the Greenplum database and GemFire, plus a consulting arm that taught agile development. It was formed in 2013 when EMC and VMware spun out their software assets, including Pivotal Labs, a consultancy founded in 1989 that pioneered pair programming. The name "Pivotal" came from that Labs division, and the company was later folded back into VMware in 2019.
