Planet Fitness, Inc.
A chain of low-cost gyms built around the idea that working out shouldn't be intimidating. Planet Fitness runs thousands of clubs across the US and beyond, welcoming casual exercisers with its trademarked "Judgement Free Zone" atmosphere and famously sounding a "Lunk Alarm" siren to discourage grunting and dropped weights. It was founded in 1992 in Dover, New Hampshire, when brothers Michael and Marc Grondahl bought a struggling Gold's Gym franchise and reinvented it as a friendlier, cheaper alternative. The free-pizza tradition began in 1999 when a Concord, New Hampshire club ordered pies for members after a hot-water outage — a gesture that became a national monthly ritual.
