A maker of steel, ArcelorMittal is one of the world's largest steel producers, supplying the metal used in cars, buildings, bridges, and appliances for customers around the globe. It was born in 2006 when Arcelor, a European steel giant, was taken over by Mittal Steel, the company founded by Indian-born tycoon Lakshmi Mittal and rooted in his family's business in Kolkata. A fun quirk: the merged name simply stitches the two old names together, a nod to the takeover that created it.
