A maker of wireless network equipment, Powerwave Technologies built the antennas, base stations, and radio-frequency power amplifiers that helped carry cellular signals for carriers around the world. Founded in 1985 by Alfonso Cordero in Santa Ana, California, the company started by making power amplifiers for analog land mobile radio and early cellular systems, then grew by buying up rivals' businesses, including Hewlett-Packard's RF amplifier division in 1999. Its name is a literal description of its craft: it supplied the "power" to amplify the "waves" that carry wireless calls and data.
