A Chicago-based bank holding company, PrivateBancorp ran The PrivateBank and Trust Company, which served middle-market businesses, entrepreneurs, and well-off families with personalized, relationship-focused banking. It was founded in 1989 by Ralph B. Mandell and opened its first office in Chicago in 1991. Its name was chosen to evoke a boutique, high-touch "private banking" feel, and in 2017 the company was acquired by Canada's CIBC.
