Raytheon Company

A major U.S. defense contractor and part of RTX Corporation, Raytheon builds missiles and radar systems used by the U.S. military and its allies, including the Patriot air-defense system and the Tomahawk cruise missile. It began in 1922 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as the American Appliance Company, founded by three engineers to build a no-moving-parts refrigerator; when that failed, they pivoted to radio tubes. The name "Raytheon," adopted in 1925, was invented purely for its modern, high-tech sound rather than any ancient meaning.
