A maker of renewable fuels, Renewable Energy Group turns natural fats, oils and greases—including recycled cooking oil and animal fats—into biodiesel and other lower-carbon fuels used by trucking fleets and other transportation. It began in 1996 when Iowa's West Central Cooperative built a plant in Ralston to find a market for farmers' unused soybean oil, later launching its SoyPOWER biodiesel brand. That venture grew into an independent company in 2006, and the Ralston site went down in history as one of the first biodiesel plants in the United States.
