Research in Motion Ltd (now Blackberry Limited)

A Canadian technology company that made the iconic BlackBerry smartphones — the handheld devices with the tiny physical QWERTY keyboards that once dominated the business world — and now builds secure software and operating systems for cars and other connected devices. It was founded in 1984 in Waterloo, Ontario, by engineering students Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin, who started out making wireless point-of-sale terminals and LED signs before pivoting to phones. The "BlackBerry" name came from a branding firm in 1999, inspired by the device's round keyboard keys, which designers thought resembled the little bumps on a blackberry fruit.
