It traces its roots to 1900, when investor Chester Congdon bought marshland in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, that proved poor for farming; the venture became the St. Mary Parish Land Company in 1908 and later pivoted to energy. The name SM Energy came about in 2010, and the initials quietly nod to that swampy Louisiana origin story.
