St. Jude Medical Inc
A maker of heart devices and pain-relief technology, St. Jude Medical built pacemakers, defibrillators, and the implantable devices that treat chronic pain. It was founded in 1976 by Manuel Villafana to sell a groundbreaking bileaflet mechanical heart valve developed at the University of Minnesota. The company took its name from Saint Jude, the patron saint of lost causes, a nod to the tough medical problems it set out to solve, and it later became part of Abbott.
