A maker of flash memory storage, Sandisk is the company behind the removable memory cards in cameras, phones, and laptops, plus USB drives and solid-state drives that everyday consumers buy. It was founded in 1988 in Silicon Valley by engineers Eli Harari, Sanjay Mehrotra, and Jack Yuan, and it co-developed the SD (Secure Digital) card standard that became the global norm for portable storage. Fun fact: it started life as "SunDisk" — co-founder Harari's young daughter suggested the name after he explained that flash memory would replace spinning hard disks that looked like the sun.
