A maker of hard disk drives and solid-state storage, Seagate builds the drives inside computers, game consoles, security cameras, and the cloud data centers that hold the internet's files. Founded in 1978 as Shugart Technology by disk pioneer Al Shugart, it renamed itself Seagate to dodge a trademark clash with Xerox—and picked the name to keep the letters S, G, and T from its original title. The company also made the ST-506, the first 5.25-inch hard drive for desktop computers.
