A San Diego biotechnology company that pioneered non-invasive prenatal testing, Sequenom created the MaterniT21 PLUS test, which screens for chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome using just a sample of the mother's blood instead of invasive procedures. It also built the MassARRAY system, a lab platform using mass spectrometry to read DNA. Founded in 1994, the name blends "sequence" and "genome," and in 2016 the company was acquired by LabCorp, the big diagnostic lab.
