A Chinese online media and social networking company that runs Sina.com, a major web portal serving news, entertainment, sports and finance to Chinese-speaking audiences, and holds a controlling interest in Weibo, one of China's most popular microblogging platforms. The company was formed in 1999 through a merger of Beijing SINA Information Technology and California-based SINANET.com. Its Chinese name, Xīnlàng, means "New Wave" — a nod to both its modern ambitions and the Latin prefix "Sino-" for China.
