Solazyme, Inc.
A biotechnology company that grew microalgae in dark fermentation vats to make renewable oils and food ingredients. Founded in 2003 by college friends Jonathan Wolfson and Harrison Dillon in a California garage, it began chasing algae biofuels before pivoting to food and nutrition, selling its AlgaWise cooking oils and AlgaVia protein powders to food makers. In 2016 it rebranded as TerraVia, Latin for "path of the earth," a nod to its sustainable mission.
