An independent oil and gas explorer based in Lafayette, Louisiana, Stone Energy drilled for and produced crude and natural gas across the Gulf of Mexico and the Appalachian Basin's Marcellus and Utica shales. It was founded in 1993 by James Hiram Stone, whose family oil business traced back to a 1952 Cincinnati start-up — and "Stone Energy" is simply the founder's own surname, a name rooted in the Old English "stān" for strength and permanence.
