A biopharmaceutical company founded in 1996 by Japanese physician-researchers Ryuji Ueno and Sachiko Kuno, Sucampo made medicines for gut and eye disorders based on prostones, fatty-acid compounds the body makes naturally. Its best-known drug was Amitiza (lubiprostone), a pill for chronic constipation, which it co-marketed with Takeda and which was later bought by Mallinckrodt in 2018. The company name is often linked to the founders' Japanese roots and their research into these acid-like compounds.
