A bank holding company rooted in Columbus, Georgia, Synovus provides consumer and commercial banking, mortgage, and investment services through its Synovus Bank brand across the Southeast. Its story begins in 1888, when a textile mill worker's dress got tangled in machinery and spilled money sewn into her hem — a mill executive offered to hold workers' savings in the mill safe and pay interest, which grew into a bank. The name "Synovus" was coined in 1989 from "synergy" and "novus," the Latin word for "new."
