A technology company that made the first popular digital video recorders, letting people pause, rewind, and record live TV with its now-iconic set-top boxes; today it licenses its smart-TV operating system to manufacturers to power their televisions. It was founded in 1997 by two former Silicon Graphics engineers, and its first device, released in March 1999, was nicknamed "The Blue Moon" because it launched on a rare blue-moon night. The name TiVo wasn't an acronym — founders just liked how it sounded, since a word ending in "o" tends to keep you smiling.
