A life and supplemental health insurance holding company, Torchmark (now called Globe Life) sells term and whole life policies mainly to middle- and lower-income American families through brands like American Income Life, Liberty National, and United American. Its roots reach back to 1900 with a fraternal benefit society that became Liberty National Life Insurance. The "Torchmark" name, adopted in 1982, pairs the torch from the Statue of Liberty with "hallmark" — fitting, since Liberty National's Birmingham headquarters once wore a 36-foot bronze Statue of Liberty replica on its roof.
