A provider of commercial and personal property-and-casualty insurance and reinsurance, Tower Group sold products like workers' compensation and commercial multi-peril coverage to businesses and homeowners. Founded around 1990, the Bermuda-based (later New York) insurer grew by snapping up smaller rivals such as CastlePoint, and for years traded on the NASDAQ under the ticker TWGP. Its name was meant to signal strength—a "tower" or pillar of the insurance market—and its roots reach back through the Tower Insurance Company of New York, founded in 1922.
