Transalta Corporation
A Canadian power generator that turns water, wind, sun, gas and coal into electricity for homes and businesses across Alberta and beyond, operating from its Calgary headquarters. Founded in 1909 as Calgary Power Company by banker Max Aitken (later Lord Beaverbrook) to light up the young province, it renamed itself TransAlta in 1981 — a mash-up meaning "across Alberta" — as it grew beyond one city. The company's first hydro plants on the Bow River predate the Calgary Stampede, its hometown's famous rodeo.
