United Overseas Bank Limited

A Singapore-based bank serving individuals and businesses across Southeast Asia, offering everyday accounts, credit cards, loans, and corporate banking through branches in dozens of countries. It was founded in 1935 as the United Chinese Bank by Sarawak-born businessman Wee Kheng Chiang and six partners, set up during the Great Depression to lend to local Hokkien merchants. The bank renamed itself United Overseas Bank in 1965 — partly to avoid a clash with a Hong Kong bank of the same name — the very year it opened its first overseas branch there.
