Vanguard Group Inc.
A giant of the investing world, Vanguard manages mutual funds and exchange-traded funds for everyday savers, retirees, and institutions, and is famous for pioneering low-cost index funds. It was founded in 1975 by John Bogle, who set up Vanguard so that the funds themselves own the company, letting profits flow back to investors as lower fees. Bogle, a student of British naval history, named the firm after HMS Vanguard, the flagship of Admiral Nelson at the 1798 Battle of the Nile.
